Scheme of Provision of subsidized Rams to Sheep Breeders
Introduction
Sheep rearing is one of the main occupations of the people in Himachal Pradesh. Rampur Bushari and Gaddi breeds of Himachal Pradesh are famous for indigenous carpet wool production in the Country. The total sheep population in the State is 8.05 lakh. As per norms one breeding ram is required per 20-25 sheep. keeping in view breedable population of approx. 3.00 lakh sheep in the State, at least 12,000 rams are required, whereas department is able to provide only 250-300 rams from its Farms. Hence, it is being proposed to provide High Genetic Merit breeding rams of Rambouillet and Russian Merino breeds and their crosses in a phased manner after purchasing form Farms/progressive breeders of the state and neighboring States and to provide these to sheep breeders at 60% subsidy.
Objective of the Scheme
Genetic improvement of indigenous Sheep breeds and dissemination of Superior Germplasm amongst the migratory flocks of sheep in H.P.
To improve Quality and Quantity of meat and wool being produced in the state, thereby ensuring better economic returns to the Sheep Breeders.
To resolve the problem of inbreeding amongst the migratory sheep flocks of Tribal Sheep Breeders.
Implementing Agency

Eligible Beneficiaries
Sheep Breeders belonging to all Category of Himachal Pradesh.
Area of Implementation
Entire State.
Eligibility Criteria
- A Sheep breeder of H.P. having flock of least 25 sheep will be considered for providing ram under this scheme.
- One ram per 25 Sheep will be allotted. Maximum of two rams will be allotted to one beneficiary.
- The beneficiary will have to sign an agreement that he will not sell and castrate the allotted ram during breeding life of ram.
Subsidy
Breeding ram will be provided on 60% subsidy.
Implementation Strategy
- High Genetic Merit (HGM ) Rams of Russian and Merino breeds and their Crosses (HGM ) will be procured under this scheme from departmental farms and progressive breeders of the State and neighboring states.
- District wise targets will be circulated to Deputy Directors (AH/B), who will allocate tentative targets to Senior Veterinary Officer on the basis of Sheep population of particular area.
- Demand from eligible sheep breeders will be collected through Veterinary Officers, who will certify the eligibility criteria in respect of applicant and No. sheep being reared by the applicant.
- The concerned Veterinary Officer after verification will submit all applications to Senior Veterinary Officer of his/her area, who will send the applications to concerned Deputy Directors (AH/B)/Controlling Officer with recommendation.
- The Deputy Directors (AH/B)/Controlling Officer will constitute a committee for purchase of rams and shall ensure F.O.R delivery of rams to selected beneficiaries and send the progress report along with compiled list of beneficiaries and send the progress report along with compiled list of beneficiaries provided assistance under this scheme to the Directorate along-with Utilization Certificate of the funds provided as per budget allocation periodically.
